Goldbacks are privately issued notes designed to serve as a voluntary form of local currency. Each note is created by placing a thin layer of 24-karat gold between durable polyester sheets, protecting the gold while keeping the note flexible for everyday handling. The notes feature intricate artwork and contain a precise fractional amount of real gold, making them one of the rare examples of modern currency that includes physical gold content. First introduced in Utah, the Goldback concept has expanded into several states. The Idaho series represents the latest addition, with artwork inspired by people, history, and themes connected to the state. Today, BGASC offers the 1/2 Idaho Goldback Gold Note.

Highlights:

  • Comes with individual currency sleeves or bundles of 100 notes!
  • Unique design for the Idaho series!
  • Allegorical figure inspired by Pietas on the reverse!
  • Contains 1/2000 troy oz of .9999 pure gold.
  • Design honors Sacagawea and her links to Idaho.
  • Please keep in mind that Goldbacks are NOT US legal tender.
  • UV enhancements and other advanced security features included.

All 1/2 Idaho Goldback Gold Notes contain 24-karat gold and feature a range of modern security measures. The designs include UV-reactive details that appear under ultraviolet light, along with micro-printing and unique serial numbers for identification. Individual notes are packaged in protective currency sleeves. When purchased in quantities of 100, the notes are bundled together with a black strap for organization. These bundles do not include separate sleeves for each note.

Design

For the design of the 1/2 Idaho Goldback Gold Note, the virtue of Pietas is represented through imagery that honors Sacagawea. Sacagawea, a member of the Lemhi Shoshone tribe, played a key role as a guide and interpreter during the Lewis and Clark Expedition. She was born around 1788 near present-day Salmon in the Lemhi Valley of Idaho. As a young girl, she was taken by Hidatsa raiders and later lived among the Mandan people in North Dakota. When the Corps of Discovery traveled through Idaho in 1805, Sacagaweas understanding of the region, her communication with the Shoshone people, and her steady presence helped the expedition move forward.

History

Pietas held an important place in Roman culture as a symbol of devotion and responsibility. Represented as a composed female figure, Pietas reflected a sense of duty toward family, the gods, and the broader community. Classical imagery often portrays her with a patera used for ceremonial offerings or alongside a stork, an animal associated with care for family. Other artistic interpretations include a swallow or a small altar nearby. The broader meaning of pietas emphasized honoring the bonds that connect individuals with their families, their society, and spiritual traditions.
