{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}To mark the 250th anniversary of American independence, Goldbacks has created a special one-time Washington D.C. Goldback issue. Washington D.C. was established as the nations capital through the Residence Act of 1790, a compromise shaped by Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison. This release showcases Columbia, Americas original female allegory, as the main design element. Currently, 1 Colorized Washington D.C. Goldback Gold Notes in GEM 70 condition are available online at BGASC.
Highlights:
Each 1 Colorized Washington D.C. Goldback Gold Note in this listing is graded GEM 70 and housed in a sealed plastic currency slab. Notes at this level display no signs of handling, even under magnification of up to five times. A key characteristic of GEM 70 notes is well-centered artwork. The added color enhances the primary design, while upgraded security features and a new Goldback wordmark symbol provide additional detail.
Design
The obverse of the Colorized Washington D.C. Goldback Gold Note features Columbia standing prominently with the U.S. Capitol Building in the background. Over time, Columbia has been depicted with symbolic objects tied to American identity. Her shield stands for defense and the protection of liberty, reflecting the nations commitment to preserving independence and democratic principles. The sword represents strength and readiness, symbolizing the resolve to defend freedom and justice when necessary. Together, these symbols convey the idea of a country prepared to uphold its values.
History
The District of Columbia was created from land contributed by Maryland and Virginia along the Potomac River. Its location was chosen to provide a central position between the northern and southern states. President George Washington selected the final site and asked Pierre Charles LEnfant to design the city plan. The capital officially relocated from Philadelphia to Washington D.C. in 1800, though the area remained lightly developed for some time afterward.
