{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}Among the many symbols passed down from ancient civilizations, the Aztec Sun Stone is one of the most recognizable for its detailed design. Its use on precious metal rounds has made it a popular choice for those who appreciate history, symmetry, and Mesoamerican heritage. Available in gold, silver, and copper, these rounds provide a well-crafted version of the original stones complex appearance. They offer both a way to hold physical metal and a connection to an important culture from the past. Right now, 1 oz SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Copper Rounds are available at BGASC.
Highlights:
Each 1 oz SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Copper Round available here is packaged in a plastic flip, with quantities of 20 rounds shipped in acrylic tubes. The Aztec Calendar Series includes multiple silver round weights, silver bars, and this 1 oz copper round.
Obverse
The obverse of the SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Copper Round features the complete image of the Sun Stone. Carved from a single basalt slab, the design represents the Aztec view of time and the universe. At the center is Tonatiuh, the sun god, depicted with a blade-shaped tongue. Surrounding him are four sections representing earlier eras. Beyond that are the twenty day symbols of the Aztec calendar, followed by rings of patterns, celestial imagery, and sun rays. The design is enclosed by two fire serpents along the outer edge.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1 oz Aztec Calendar Copper Round, a portrait of Emperor Cuauhtemoc appears facing right. He became the final ruler of the Aztec Empire in 1520 and was related to Moctezuma II. During the Spanish conquest led by Hernan Cortes, Cuauhtemoc led efforts to defend Tenochtitlan. Despite determined resistance, the city fell. He was captured in 1521 and later executed in 1525.
History
The Aztec Sun Stone was uncovered on December 17, 1790, during construction work in Mexico Citys central plaza, known as the Zcalo. The excavation, ordered by Viceroy Juan Vicente de Gemes, revealed the large basalt stone just below ground level. News of the discovery spread quickly and led to increased scholarly interest in the Aztec civilization and its history.
