All 1 oz SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Silver Rounds feature detailed artwork on each side. Individual rounds are shipped in plastic flips, while multiples are offered in tubes of 20 or Master Boxes of 500 rounds. Each Master Box includes 25 tubes in total.
Obverse
In the obverse design of the SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Silver Round, the Sun Stone is depicted with its layered structure intact. The center shows Tonatiuh, surrounded by panels representing earlier worlds. Around these are rings of calendar symbols and additional decorative elements. The design is completed by two fire serpents, known as Xiuhcoatl, that circle the outer edge.
Reverse
For the reverse of 1 oz Aztec Calendar Silver Rounds, the design includes a right-profile portrait of Emperor Cuahtemoc. As the last ruler of the Aztec Empire, he governed from 1520 to 1521. His name translates to Descending Eagle, and he is remembered for resisting Spanish forces during the fall of Tenochtitln. He led the defense of the city before being captured in 1521.
History
The original Aztec Sun Stone was carved from a massive basalt disc during the rule of Emperor Axayacatl and is believed to have been completed around 1479 CE. Measuring approximately 3.6 meters across and weighing nearly 24 metric tons, it is considered both a ceremonial piece and a representation of Aztec cosmology. The stone is associated with Tonatiuh, the sun god, and reflects beliefs about time and recurring cycles.
