Design
The obverse of the Washington D.C. Goldback Gold Note shows Columbia standing prominently in front of the U.S. Capitol Building. She is depicted holding both a shield and a sword, traditional elements long associated with her representation. The shield stands for protection, defense of liberty, and the preservation of democratic institutions. The sword represents strength, preparedness, and the willingness to defend freedom and justice when needed. Together, these symbols reflect the balance between peace and readiness that has shaped the nations identity.
History
Before Lady Liberty became the most widely recognized female figure in American symbolism, Columbia served as the nations primary personification during the 18th and 19th centuries. Her name is derived from Christopher Columbus, and she appeared frequently in early poetry, political cartoons, and public art. Columbia was often portrayed as a classical figure dressed in flowing robes, sometimes wearing a liberty cap or a crown of stars. She symbolized freedom, national unity, and progress, and could be found on early coinage, in patriotic songs like Hail, Columbia, and across a wide range of artistic works.
