{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}In the 1850s, the US $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle was created to help manage the large flow of gold coming from the California Gold Rush, which needed to be converted into everyday money. First issued in 1850, this $20 gold coin showcased James B. Longacres portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet, with thirteen stars around her. This style, commonly known as the Liberty Coronet design, became the longest-used design on the $20 Double Eagle series. Today, 1854 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available at BGASC.
Highlights:
All 1854 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins listed here are offered in XF45 condition. In this grade, the coins show light wear on the high points of the design, with some original mint luster still present in protected areas. To meet the needs of commerce in a growing nation, several US Mint branches produced these coins, including the main facility in Philadelphia, the New Orleans Mint, and the newly opened San Francisco Mint, which quickly became central to minting gold from the West.
Obverse
On the obverse of 1854 Liberty Double Eagles, you will find a left-facing image of Lady Liberty. Longacres design presents Liberty with a coronet crown on her head, set within a field that includes 13 stars and the date of issue.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1854 $20 Gold Double Eagle Coin features the Great Seal of the United States. This design shows a bald eagle in front-facing relief with the national shield on its chest, clutching arrows that symbolize military strength and an olive branch that stands for peace.
History
The year 1854 found the United States in a period of expansion, with new railroads, growing western settlements, and active farm trade supporting the economy, even as serious issues were beginning to surface. The completion of key railway lines between the East Coast and the Midwest opened up fresh routes for goods and passengers, while steady shipments of California gold added to the nations money supply. At the same time, rising speculation in land and railroad ventures increased financial risk, and ongoing disputes about extending slavery into new territories were placing strain on the relationship between North and South, pointing ahead to the financial shock of the Panic of 1857.
