{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}The 1856-O $10 Liberty Gold Eagle was struck during a major chapter in U.S. coin history. Fueled by the California Gold Rush, this period saw increased coin production to handle the influx of gold. That year, the New Orleans Mint struck a limited number of $10 Liberty Eaglesjust 14,500 coinsmaking them more scarce than others from the same era. BGASC now offers 1856-O $10 Liberty Gold Eagle Coins to collectors and gold buyers.
Coin Highlights:
Each coin in this listing is housed in a protective plastic slab and has been graded About Uncirculated 50. These coins display minor wear on the raised details, but most of their original luster remains. Because of the low production total and the unique role of the New Orleans Mint, this coin is a sought-after issue from the Liberty Gold Eagle series.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 1856-O Liberty Eagle, youll see a design by Christian Gobrecht featuring Lady Liberty in profile. She wears a coronet marked Liberty, and her hair is tied up with loose curls falling to the side. The portrait is surrounded by 13 stars, and the date is engraved below.
Reverse
The reverse of the coin features the heraldic eagle, also by Gobrecht. The eagle appears in front-facing relief with a shield across its body. Arrows and an olive branch are clutched in its talons, symbolizing strength and peace. This version of the coin, known as Type I, does not feature the motto In God We Trust. An O mintmark at the bottom identifies the New Orleans origin.
History
Although other mints like Philadelphia and San Francisco had higher mintages in 1856, the New Orleans Mint made a more limited run. These coins were part of the Mints effort to support the Southern economy by converting available gold into circulating coinage. Despite its limited operations at times, the New Orleans Mint played a key role in expanding commerce in the region.
