{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}Pre-1933 US gold coins are highly collectible pieces that continue to attract interest from numismatists and precious metals buyers alike. Gold coins struck from 1838 to 1933 offered consistent weights based on denomination and featured a trusted gold content of 90% gold and 10% copper. With both historical importance and strong gold value, these coins remain a favorite for collectors building classic American collections. Right now, 1858-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins with Certified Acceptance Corporation (CAC) authentication are available at BGASC.
Highlights:
All 1858-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins available here are graded AU55. An About Uncirculated 55 grade places the coin near the top of the AU range (5058) and indicates limited wear, mainly visible on the highest points of the design. Many coins in this condition still display noticeable luster and strong overall detail. CAC authentication adds another level of trust, confirming that the coin meets strict standards for quality within its grade.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1858-S Pre-33 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin features a left-profile portrait of Lady Liberty. She wears a coronet bearing LIBERTY, with 13 stars around the outer design and the date positioned at the bottom.
Reverse
On the reverse of the coin is a heraldic eagle with wings spread wide, holding an olive branch and arrows. The inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination TWENTY D. This is the Type I reverse design, which was later updated in 1866 with the addition of the national motto and again in 1877 when the denomination was changed to spell out DOLLARS rather than using the D abbreviation.
History
The 1858-S Double Eagle is one of the early releases from the San Francisco Mint and dates back to the California Gold Rush period. As gold discoveries continued to grow in the western United States, the San Francisco Mint became essential for turning locally mined gold into circulating federal coinage. Collectors value coins like the 1858-S not only for their connection to this historic era, but also because Pre-1933 gold coins remain legal to own. After President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued an Executive Order in 1933 restricting private ownership of gold, later circulating gold pieces became far less accessible to collectors.
