{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}Pre-1933 American gold coins remain a favorite among collectors who enjoy classic US coinage. Coins struck from 1834 to 1933 are especially well known for their reliable weight standards for each denomination and their consistent gold composition of 90% gold and 10% copper. Along with their solid gold content, these coins also reflect a major era in American economic and minting history. As a result, many collectors consider them an important part of a well-rounded portfolio or collection. Right now, 1858-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available from BGASC.
Highlights:
Each 1858-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin available in this listing has been graded About Uncirculated 58 by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation. AU58 is the highest grade within the About Uncirculated category, which runs from AU50 through AU58. Coins at this grade are sometimes described as sliders because they are very close to mint-state condition. Most pieces show only slight friction on the highest points and may still display partial or strong mint luster.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1858-S Pre-33 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin shows Lady Liberty facing left. She wears a coronet with LIBERTY inscribed on it, and 13 stars surround the portrait to represent the original colonies. The date appears along the bottom edge of the coin.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1858-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle, the design features a heraldic eagle with wings spread outward. The eagle holds arrows and an olive branch, and the inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination TWENTY D. This Type I reverse design was later revised in 1866 with the addition of the national motto, and it was updated again in 1877 when the denomination was changed to spell out DOLLARS instead of using the abbreviated D.
History
The 1858-S Liberty Gold Double Eagle is one of the earlier Double Eagle issues struck at the San Francisco Mint, which began operations in 1854 during the California Gold Rush. This coin features the Liberty Head design created by James B. Longacre on the obverse, along with a heraldic eagle design on the reverse. The mintage of 846,710 coins makes it more available than some other Type I Double Eagles, but many examples were heavily used in commerce or shipped abroad, leaving fewer high-quality pieces for collectors today.
