{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}Pre-1933 US gold coins are highly regarded by collectors and investors who appreciate historic American coinage. Gold coins produced from 1834 through 1933 are especially known for their standardized weight measurements and consistent gold content. During these years, the United States struck its gold coins using an alloy of 90% gold and 10% copper, helping ensure durability in circulation. With a strong connection to major periods of American history, these classic gold issues remain an important choice for numismatists today. Currently, the 1861 Pre-33 $1 Indian Head Gold Coin is available online from BGASC.
Highlights:
This 1861 Pre-33 $1 Indian Head Gold Coin is certified by the Professional Coin Grading Service with a Mint State 62 grade. Coins in MS62 condition are considered uncirculated, though they often display noticeable handling marks and a subdued level of luster. Small clusters of contact marks may appear across the surfaces, and some examples may also feature a larger mark that stands out. This coin is classified as a Type III specimen, which includes the final Liberty Head portrait used on the obverse along with the second reverse design style in the series.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1861 Pre-33 $1 Indian Head Gold Coin features a left-facing image of Liberty wearing a feathered headdress. This design is commonly referred to as the Indian Princess, but it was created as a symbolic representation of Liberty rather than a depiction of a Native American figure. The name of the issuing nation is displayed around the portrait, and the date is located below.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1861 Pre-33 Indian Head Gold Coin, the denomination and date are framed by a wreath made of corn, wheat, cotton, and tobacco. These agricultural elements were chosen to represent the importance of farming and natural resources to the American economy during the 19th century.
History
The 1861 Type 3 Gold Dollar was minted during the first year of the Civil War, a time when gold coinage began to vanish from daily use as people held onto precious metals. Paper currency became more common as a result. Measuring only 15mm in diameter, this coin is one of the smallest pieces of regularly circulating coinage ever struck by the United States. Its compact size, historic background, and recognizable design have helped maintain its popularity among collectors.
