{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}The United States Two Cent Piece was issued from 1864 through 1873 and remains notable as the first U.S. coin to display the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. This phrase would later appear on many forms of American currency and become widely recognized. Even though the denomination was produced for just a decade, it offers collectors a manageable series with several common dates and a few rarities. The 1865 example was struck during the closing period of the Civil War and carries a BN designation. Right now, 1865 Two Cent Piece Coins in certified condition are available online from BGASC.
Highlights:
These 1865 Two Cent Piece Coins are graded Mint State 63 with a BN (Brown) designation. The BN label refers to the color of the copper surfaces. A coin given this designation has less than 5% of its original red copper tone remaining, with the rest of the surfaces showing the darker brown color that naturally forms as copper ages. Coins graded MS63 typically have good eye appeal overall but may feature several small contact marks, a few heavier marks in scattered spots, and minor hairlines that can be seen without magnification.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 1865 Two Cent Piece, the design by James B. Longacre centers on a Union shield. Above the shield is a bundle of crossed arrows, while a banner across the top carries the inscription IN GOD WE TRUST. This coin marked the first time the motto appeared on a United States coin, making it a notable piece in American numismatic history.
Reverse
The reverse of 1865 Two Cent Piece Coins features the denomination 2 CENTS in the middle of the design. A wreath made of wheat and other crops surrounds the denomination, while the outer edge includes the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The design is clean and simple, highlighting agricultural elements and national identity.
History
The 1865 issue was struck at the Philadelphia Mint near the end of the Civil War. Because over 13 million pieces were produced, it is considered one of the more available dates in the short-lived series. This helps collectors obtain a certified example connected to an important period in American history without the higher cost of rarer issues. Each coin was struck using a bronze alloy composed of 95% copper with small amounts of tin and zinc.
