Obverse
The obverse of the 1873 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coin depicts Lady Liberty in left-profile relief, adorned with a coronet crown and framed by 13 stars. This design was created by James B. Longacre, who served as the 4th Chief Engraver of the US Mint. Inscriptions read 1873 and LIBERTY.
Reverse
On the reverse of this 1873 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin, you’ll find the heraldic eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch. The eagle is framed by identifying marks of the coin while 13 stars are seen above the eagles head. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and TWENTY D.
History
Produced at the Philadelphia Mint, these coins boast a rich history, featuring three unique reverse designs over the years. From 1849 to 1866, the design remained unaltered. From 1866 to 1877, “In God We Trust” was incorporated above the eagle, and from 1877 to 1907, the denomination was spelled out at the bottom.
