Obverse

On the obverse of the 1873 Pre-33 Liberty Gold Double Eagle, Liberty faces left wearing a coronet inscribed with LIBERTY. Thirteen stars form a ring around her portrait to represent the founding states. The date mark is shown below the bust.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1873 $20 Liberty Double Eagle carries the Great Seal of the United States. This design depicts a heraldic bald eagle with a shield on its chest, arrows in one talon, and an olive branch in the other. As a Type II reverse, the design includes the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, while the denomination remains noted as TWENTY D.

History

Three U.S. Mint facilities struck $20 Liberty Double Eagles in 1873, with a total mintage of more than 2.7 million coins. The largest contributions came from Philadelphia, which struck 1.7 million coins, and San Francisco, which produced just over 1 million. The coins presented here are Open 3 pieces, a variety distinguished by the open, wider loops in the numeral 3 of the date.
