Designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, the coin shows a coroneted bust of Liberty. Today, BGASC offers 1875 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins in certified condition.
Highlights:
The 1875 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles offered here are certified Mint State 63. Coins at this grade may show softened mint luster and several small contact marks. A few larger marks might also be present, though the coins remain attractive overall.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1875 $20 Liberty Double Eagle displays Lady Liberty in left profile, wearing a coronet inscribed with LIBERTY. The design is surrounded by 13 stars, with the date inscribed below the portrait.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1875 Pre-33 Liberty Gold Double Eagle is the Great Seal of the United States. The heraldic eagle appears with a shield on its chest, clutching arrows and an olive branch. As a Type II design, the coin features IN GOD WE TRUST and the denomination shown as TWENTY D.
History
In 1875, three mints produced the Liberty Double Eagle. San Francisco struck most of the coins with about 1.23 million pieces, while Philadelphia issued 295,720 and Carson City struck 111,151. The combined mintage that year reached nearly 1.64 million coins.
