Obverse
On the obverse, the 1875-S Liberty Double Eagle depicts Lady Liberty. This design was created by James B. Longacre, the U.S. Mints 4th Chief Engraver, in 1849. The portrait shows Liberty in left-profile with a coronet marked LIBERTY atop her head, modeled in a style similar to earlier coin designs by Christian Gobrecht.
Reverse
The reverse carries the image of the Great Seal of the United States. A bald eagle with a shield on its chest is shown holding arrows and an olive branch. These two items represent the dual powers of military readiness and peaceful intentions.
History
Because many of these coins were used for overseas trade rather than local spending, signs of handling are not uncommon. This release features the Type II reverse, a design introduced in 1866 and used until 1876. It includes the phrase IN GOD WE TRUST and shows the value as TWENTY D, a revision from the previous Type I version.
