{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}Few coins are as well-known in American numismatics as the Morgan Silver Dollar. First issued in 1878 and produced through 1904 before returning briefly in 1921, the series represents a time when silver production in the American West played a major role in the nations economy. The Morgan Dollars large size and detailed artwork have helped it remain a favorite among collectors for many decades. This particular 1879 Morgan Silver Dollar has been graded MS66+ by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). Certified examples of the 1879 Morgan Silver Dollar are now available from BGASC.
Highlights:
Each 1879 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin available here has earned an MS66+ grade from the PCGS. The plus symbol is used for coins that sit at the very top of the MS66 category. Coins at this level typically display bright mint luster with only a few minor contact marks and limited hairlines that are generally visible only under magnification.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1879 Morgan Dollar features a portrait of Liberty facing left. Designer George T. Morgan, who served as Assistant Engraver at the United States Mint, chose to model Liberty after a real American woman rather than using a traditional allegorical figure. The inspiration for Libertys portrait was Anna Willess Williams, a Philadelphia schoolteacher.
Reverse
On the reverse of 1879 Morgan Silver Dollars is a carefully detailed depiction of the American bald eagle. The eagle appears with its wings extended and holds arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. Together, these symbols reflect the nations readiness to maintain peace while protecting its strength.
History
The Philadelphia Mint struck the 1879 Morgan Silver Dollar during the early life of the series. Coming just one year after the Morgan Dollar debuted, the 1879 issue saw a total production of about 14.8 million coins at Philadelphia. Although circulated examples from this year are relatively common, mint state pieces with strong details and original surface quality are far less common and remain appealing to collectors.
