The Carson City facility operated from 1870 through 1893 and was founded to refine and strike coinage from silver mined throughout the region. Dollars struck here feature the famous CC mint mark, a small detail that has helped these coins remain popular among collectors for generations. These 1890-CC Morgan Silver Dollar Coins come in VF30 condition, which is near the high end of the Very Fine grading scale (20-35). Coins in this range have light overall wear, but the design remains well defined, with most major details still clear and visible, including many of the letters in the legends.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 1890-CC Morgan Silver Dollar is the well-known Liberty portrait designed by George T. Morgan. Liberty is shown in a left-facing profile wearing a Phrygian cap with a coronet and decorative elements in her hair. A laurel wreath is visible along the top of her head, giving the design a refined appearance. The design is framed by 13 stars, representing the original colonies, while the date appears at the bottom.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1890-CC Morgan Dollar Coin also comes from George T. Morgans original designs. It features a heraldic bald eagle with its wings fully spread. The eagle holds arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other, symbolizing both defense and peace. This bold image became one of the most recognizable reverse designs in US coinage history.
History
The 1890-CC Morgan Silver Dollar is notable because it was produced late in the Carson City Mints short lifespan. Its mintage of 2,309,041 coins may seem strong compared to other CC issues, but collectors often point out that this date is much more difficult to locate in higher uncirculated grades. Unlike other Carson City Morgan Dollars that were held in government storage for long periods, fewer 1890-CC pieces were preserved in Treasury vaults. As a result, many surviving examples today show circulation wear.
