{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}The Liberty Head Eagle stands out as one of the longest-running American coin designs, created by Christian Gobrecht in 1838. That year, the image of Liberty was featured on the Eagle, Half Eagle, and Quarter Eagle coins. This design remained in use on these denominations for decades, lasting until 1908 on some issues. Some of the most appealing coins in this series were produced at the Carson City Mint, such as the 1893-CC $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle. BGASC now offers these coins in certified condition for purchase online.
Highlights:
These 1893-CC $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagles have been certified with a Mint State 61 grade. This grade typically shows weakened luster and a number of noticeable marks from contact. Some fine scratches or hairlines may also appear on the coins surface.
Obverse
The obverse of each 1893-CC Liberty Half Eagle includes a classic portrait of Lady Liberty. This side of the coin presents her in profile, facing left, wearing a coronet marked with the word “Liberty.” Surrounding her head are 13 stars to represent the original states. The year of issue sits at the bottom of the design.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1893-CC $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle is an image of the heraldic eagle. This version of the design features a bald eagle with the national shield at its center. The eagle holds arrows and an olive branch in its talons, with a banner above bearing the national motto, designating this as a Type II reverse.
History
1893 marked the final year the Carson City Mint struck Half Eagles, as the mint shut down later that year. That years $5 Liberty Half Eagles were also struck in Philadelphia, New Orleans, and San Francisco. The largest production came from Philadelphia with over 1.5 million coins, while New Orleans and San Francisco struck 110,000 and 224,000, respectively.
