Known for being the largest gold denomination ever circulated, this coin featured just two major designs during its 84 years of production. Obverse
On the obverse of the 1904 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle, youll see James B. Longacres portrait of Lady Liberty. This left-profile design shows Liberty wearing a coronet crown, with 13 stars overhead and the date below.
Reverse
The reverse of the coin features the Type III design of the Liberty Double Eagle. This side depicts an American bald eagle with the national shield on its chest, clutching arrows and an olive branch. Above the eagle is the national motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” with “TWENTY DOLLARS” inscribed below, replacing the earlier “Twenty D” denomination seen in prior designs.
History
The 1904 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle is a significant issue in this historic series. Coins were struck that year at the Philadelphia and San Francisco Mints, with production totals of 6.256 million and 5.134 million coins, respectively. These numbers make 1904 the highest-mintage year for the Liberty Head design and include the highest individual outputs from both mints in the series.
