History
Aside from the Liberty Double Eagle, one of James B. Longacre’s most notable designs is the Indian Head cent, which was first minted in 1859. This coin featured a portrait of Liberty wearing a Native American headdress on the obverse side, giving it a distinctive and unique appearance. The Indian Head cent remained in circulation until 1909 and is still highly sought after by collectors today.
