Produced between 1883 and 1912, the Liberty Head Nickel series represents an important era in the development of United States coinage. The design was created by Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber and later became widely known due to the extremely rare 1913 Liberty Head Nickel, a coin with only five confirmed examples. Beyond that famous rarity, the series remains appealing to collectors thanks to its classic design and the opportunity to build a complete set without an overwhelming number of dates and mint marks. This particular example from 1906 is a proof coin graded PR64 by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). Today, certified 1906 Liberty Head Nickels are available online at BGASC.

Highlights:

  • Coin arrives in an individual slab!
  • 24th issue of Liberty Head Nickels!
  • Produced by the Philadelphia Mint!
  • Contains 75% copper.
  • Issued a face value of $.05 (USD) by the United States.
  • Bears a grade of PR64 from the PCGS.
  • Lady Liberty is on the obverse.
  • A wreath surrounds the Roman numeral V on the reverse.

These 1906 Liberty Head Nickels are available in PR64 condition. Each proof specimen shows appealing overall eye appeal along with standard mint luster for the grade. Small contact marks may appear, sometimes in groups, and one or two moderate marks could also be visible. Light patches of hairlines may occur, along with minor scuffs or other small surface marks.

Obverse

The obverse of the 1906 Liberty Head Nickel features a left-facing portrait of Liberty created in a restrained neoclassical style. Barbers design shows Liberty wearing a coronet that displays her name. Her hair is pulled back and arranged neatly, creating a composed portrait that reflects the design standards used on many coins of the late 19th century.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 1906 Liberty Head Nickel is a large Roman numeral V, representing the five-cent denomination. The numeral sits within a decorative wreath made up of cotton, corn, wheat, and tobacco plants. These agricultural elements were included to symbolize key crops produced throughout the United States and are tied together with a ribbon at the base.

History

The 1906 Liberty Head Nickel was struck only at the Philadelphia Mint and does not carry a mint mark, which was standard practice for Philadelphia coinage at that time. Approximately 38.6 million coins were produced during the year, making it one of the more available issues in the series. While many examples circulated heavily, higher-quality coins with strong detail and better preservation are less commonly encountered today.
