The plus designation indicates coins that rank near the top of the MS65 category. Obverse
The obverse of the 1908 Pre-33 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle showcases Augustus Saint-Gaudens celebrated Liberty design. Liberty is shown walking forward while carrying a torch and an olive branch, with the United States Capitol in the distance and rays of sunlight filling the background. The design remains one of the finest artistic achievements ever used on an American coin.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1908 $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, a majestic American bald eagle is shown gliding across the coin above the rising sun. Saint-Gaudens chose a natural flying eagle instead of the traditional heraldic style seen on earlier US gold coinage, giving the reverse a distinctive appearance that has been admired by generations of collectors.

These 1908 No Motto Double Eagles were introduced as the United States worked through the economic effects of the Panic of 1907. With financial conditions gradually improving, the coins entered circulation across the country and also played an important role in international commerce.
