{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}The 1908 No Motto Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle marks an important moment in the history of United States gold coinage. Issued before the IN GOD WE TRUST motto returned to the design later that year, these coins reflect the original artistic concept supported by President Theodore Roosevelt. Their short production period and historical importance continue to make them desirable among collectors. Certified 1908 Pre-33 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins are now available from BGASC.
Highlights:
Each 1908 Pre-33 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coin offered here is a No Motto example that was struck before the addition of the IN GOD WE TRUST inscription to later 1908 releases. Certified Mint State 63 by PCGS, these coins feature moderate mint luster along with numerous light contact marks, with the possibility of a few larger marks present as expected for the grade.
Obverse
The obverse design showcases Augustus Saint-Gaudens image of Liberty walking confidently ahead while carrying a torch and an olive branch. Behind Liberty, the Capitol building appears beneath rays of the rising sun, creating a balanced design that has remained popular for generations.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1908 $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle is a flying American bald eagle positioned above the rising sun. Saint-Gaudens chose a natural representation of the nation’s bird instead of the formal heraldic style seen on earlier coinage, resulting in a design that continues to be admired by collectors.
History
Production of the 1908 No Motto Double Eagle took place at both the Philadelphia Mint and the Denver Mint. Philadelphia struck 4,271,551 coins, while Denver contributed 663,750 pieces. The larger Philadelphia mintage makes those coins more commonly available, while the lower Denver output has helped create additional collector demand. Both mints produced these coins during the brief period before Congress restored the national motto.
