The Indian Gold Half Eagle was the final version of the US Mints circulating $5 gold coin before it was discontinued. Introduced in 1908, the coin remained in use until 1933, though it was only struck from 1908-1916, with one last issue in 1929. BGASC now offers a three-coin set of early Pre-33 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagles, each in Extremely Fine condition. Right now, 1910-1912 Pre-33 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle 3-Coin Sets are available at BGASC.

Each of the Pre-33 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagles in this 3-coinset comesindividually encapsulated within a wooden, three-coin box. Each set includes one coin from each date, 1910, 1911, and 1912. These coins are in Extremely Fine condition, meaning they show light wear on the highest points of the design. Some coins may also retain a slight amount of original mint luster.

Obverse

On the obverse of each Pre-33 $5 Indian Half Eagle, there is a left-facing portrait of an indigenous figure. While not based on a specific person, this was the first time an indigenous figure was depicted on a US coin. The portrait is framed by 13 stars, the word LIBERTY, and the coins date.

Reverse

The reverse side of the $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle features an American bald eagle perched on a sheaf of arrows. The arrows are wrapped in an olive branch, representing both military readiness and a hope for peace.

History

The $5 Indian Half Eagle is a unique piece of American coinage history due to its incuse strike. This minting technique presses the design into the surface of the coin instead of raising it in relief. The series is also notable for being the first US coin to feature an indigenous figure.
