Obverse
On the obverse side of every 1915 100 Corona Austrian Gold Coin is a left-facing portrait of Emperor Franz Joseph I. He ascended the throne in December 1848 and remained in power for nearly seven decades. His reign oversaw both the rise of the empire and its involvement in World War I, a conflict that contributed to the eventual collapse of the Austro-Hungarian state after his passing in 1916.
Reverse
The reverse design showcases the crowned double-headed eagle, a powerful symbol of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In the eagle’s grasp is the heraldic shield representing the Hapsburg Dynasty, the royal family that governed the empire during Franz Joseph I’s reign.

The original version of the 100 Corona Gold Coin was released in the early 1900s, joining the smaller 10 and 20 Corona coins. First introduced in 1908, the 100 Corona coin was created to honor the 60th year of Franz Joseph I’s rule as Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary. These coins were minted until 1914. When the restrike series began in 1975, the Austrian Mint selected 1915 as the commemorative date for all issues.
