These 1916-S $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coins are graded Mint State 61. Such coins can show a few heavy contact marks and a patch of hairlines. Many coins from this year retain bright luster, with gold tones ranging from greenish to orange shades.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 1916-S $5 Gold Half Eagle, youll see a left-profile image of an indigenous figure. As one of the earliest indigenous-themed US coin designs, it portrays a Native American chief wearing a feathered headdress. Thirteen stars surround the portraitsix to the left, seven to the rightalong with the date at the bottom.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1916-S Indian Gold Half Eagle carries an image of a bald eagle. The bird rests on a set of arrows wrapped with an olive branch, its wings folded at its sides. Both the obverse and reverse are incuse struck, meaning the images are sunk into the coin rather than raised above the surface.
History
Bela Lyon Pratt created this unique design approach in 1908. By pressing the Native American chiefs portrait into the coin, he broke from standard practice and introduced a style that was debated at the time but remains a standout in US coinage.
