First issued in 1907, this coin remained in circulation until 1933, with short breaks during World War I. Highlights:
These 1924 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins are graded Mint State 66. Coins with this grade have above-average luster and only a few minor contact marks. Any fine hairlines are usually visible only with magnification, and small imperfections do not take away from the coins appeal.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1924 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle shows Augustus Saint-Gaudens famous Liberty design. Liberty steps forward holding a torch and olive branch, framed by a brilliant burst of sunlight in the background.
Reverse
On the reverse, the 1924 $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle highlights a bald eagle in flight above a rising sun. The Type II version includes Arabic numerals for the date and 48 stars encircling Liberty on the obverse, with the motto In God We Trust added to the reverse design.
History
Saint-Gaudens Liberty draws from ancient art and classical ideas of freedom. Her strong, forward stance represents hope and progress, while her flowing gown and the surrounding rays evoke timeless symbolism. The artist may have used more than one model for Libertys image, though Hettie Anderson, a Swedish-born model, is often cited as an influence. The designs graceful composition helped set a new standard for U.S. coin artistry.
