The year 1926 marked the United States Sesquicentennial, celebrating 150 years since the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776. To honor this historic occasion, the United States Mint issued a commemorative $2.50 gold quarter eagle as part of the official national festivities. Today, certified 1926 $2.50 Sesquicentennial Gold Coins are available from BGASC.

Highlights:

  • Arrives inside a plastic slab!
  • Celebrates Americas 150th anniversary!
  • Stirring depiction of Liberty!
  • Contains .1209 troy oz of actual gold content.
  • Bears a face value of $2.50 (USD) backed by the federal government.
  • Issued a grade of Mint State 62 by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation.

Offered here in MS62 condition, each 1926 $2.50 Sesquicentennial Gold Coin shows solid Mint State qualities with moderate overall appeal. Coins in this grade commonly display remaining luster that may be slightly diminished. Contact marks are often visible in primary design areas, along with scattered hairlines or a small concentration of hairlines from handling.

Obverse

The obverse of the 1926 $2.50 Sesquicentennial Gold Coin features Lady Liberty in a classic and symbolic design. She is shown wearing flowing garments while holding a scroll in her left hand that represents the Declaration of Independence. In her right hand, Liberty carries a torch, symbolizing freedom and enlightenment. The key dates associated with the Sesquicentennial are included on this side of the coin.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1926 Sesquicentennial Gold Coin displays Independence Hall, one of the most important landmarks in American history. The design was created by US Mint Engraver John R. Sinnock. Although 200,000 coins were struck, sales did not meet expectations, and many were later melted. The final number of surviving coins is reported at 46,019 pieces.

History

The Sesquicentennial celebration took place during a period of rapid growth and change in the United States. Hosted primarily in Philadelphia, the Sesquicentennial International Exposition showcased American innovation, industrial strength, and cultural progress. As the country looked back on its revolutionary beginnings, it also highlighted its transformation into a modern nation during the energetic years of the Roaring Twenties.
