Born in 1753 in Guanajuato, Hidalgo was a forward-thinking man who challenged colonial power and advocated for the rights of indigenous peoples and mestizos. Obverse
The obverse side of the 1951-1954 Mexican Silver Coins shows Mexicos national coat of arms. The design features a golden eagle in left-profile, perched on a cactus while holding a serpent. A wreath surrounds the lower part of the design, and inscriptions in Spanish mark the nation of issue.
Reverse
The reverse side of these coins carries a left-profile portrait of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. As the father of Mexican independence, his image stands as a lasting tribute to courage and leadership.
History
On September 16, 1810, Hidalgo gave his famous Grito de Dolores (Cry of Dolores), a speech that launched the Mexican independence movement. Leading an army of indigenous peoples, mestizos, and criollos, he experienced early successes before losing at the Battle of Caldern Bridge in January 1811. Captured while fleeing, Hidalgo was executed on July 30, 1811, but his legacy helped push Mexico toward independence in 1821.
