{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}The South African Mint rolled out fractional Gold Krugerrands in 1980, after the 1 oz Gold Krugerrand first launched in 1967. These smaller sizes, including the 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz coins, gave more investors a way to buy gold at a lower entry point. Right now, BGASC has 1985 1/4 oz South African Gold Krugerrand Coins available for online purchase.
Highlights:
Your 1985 1/4 oz South African Gold Krugerrand Coin ships in a protective plastic flip. The designs featured on the Krugerrand series have remained unchanged across all weights since the 1967 introduction of the first 1 oz gold coin.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 1985 1/4 oz Gold Krugerrand, you’ll find a portrait of Paul Kruger. This design was originally created for coins of the South African Pound in the 1890s, during Kruger’s time as President of the South African Republic. Known affectionately as Oom Paul, or Uncle Paul, Kruger remains a well-recognized figure in South African history.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 1985 South African Gold Krugerrand highlights the Springbok antelope. As the national emblem of South Africa, the Springbok has appeared on the nations coins since the 1930s. Native to southern Africa, this antelope stands for the country’s unique wildlife and natural beauty.
History
The fractional Krugerrands were launched during a time when South Africa was dealing with international sanctions because of its apartheid policies. These sanctions complicated the availability of Krugerrands in many parts of the world, but the new fractional sizes kept the coin popular until other bullion options, like the Canadian Maple Leaf and American Eagle, became more common.
