The Chinese Gold Panda Series was still new to collectors in 1987, but that year became one of the most significant moments for the series. It is the only year in which Gold Panda coins were issued by two different Chinese mints. BGASC now has 1987-S 1/20 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coins available.

Highlights:

  • Comes with an individual plastic flip!
  • 6th year of release in the Gold Panda Series!
  • Struck by the Shanghai Mint!
  • Total mintage of 133,080 coins!
  • Contains 1/20 troy oz of .999 pure gold.
  • The face value of 5 Yuan is fully backed by the Chinese government.
  • On the obverse is the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests.
  • The reverse showcases a Giant Panda leaning down for a drink from a pond.

All 1987-S 1/20 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coins are shipped in individual plastic flips. During 1987, the Chinese Mint struck Gold Pandas at both the Shanghai and Shenyang Mints. The coins with the S mint mark on the reverse are the issues from Shanghai.

Obverse

The obverse side of the 1987-S Gold Panda depicts the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This famous building in Beijing is part of the Temple of Heaven complex and has been a recurring design on Gold Pandas since 1982, shown with its broad steps leading to the hall.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1987-S 1/20 oz Gold Panda displays the exclusive design from that year, with a Giant Panda leaning toward a pond for a drink of water. Play behavior is important to pandas, helping young bears develop strength and skills, while also offering enjoyment at all ages.

History

Giant pandas are admired for their size and peaceful nature, but they are also known to be playful, especially in their younger years. Cubs often climb, tumble, and wrestle, while adults occasionally roll around or slide down snowy slopes for fun.
