{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}The Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf was first introduced in 1988 by the Royal Canadian Mint, debuting at the same time as the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf. This platinum coin has a unique history, as its first two years of production feature the second-generation effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Right now, 1988 1/10 oz Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf Coins are available from BGASC.
Highlights:
Each 1988 1/10 oz Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf Coin in this listing is packaged in a protective plastic flip. This coin is part of the inaugural release of the Platinum Maple Leaf Series, which originally included 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz coins. These coins were produced annually until 1995, with additional issues in 1999 and 2002. Since 2009, the Platinum Maple Leaf has been struck exclusively as a 1 oz coin.
Obverse
The obverse of 1988 Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf Coins features Machins right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. She is shown wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara, with a clear background field around her image. This was the final effigy of Elizabeth II created by a British artist to appear on Canadian currency before the Royal Canadian Mint transitioned to a Canadian-designed portrait in 1990.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1988 1/10 oz Platinum Maple Leaf, the sugar maple leaf is depicted. This design was created by Walter Ott in 1979 and originally used on the Gold Maple Leaf Series. It has since been featured across all silver, platinum, and palladium versions of the Maple Leaf.
History
The Royal Canadian Mint introduced the Platinum Maple Leaf in 1988 with Arnold Machins portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This image of the Queen, created in 1965 for British coinage, was widely used on Commonwealth currency and even British postage stamps. It captures Elizabeth II at age 39, with a refined yet stately presence.
