The South African Krugerrand Gold Coin witnessed a remarkable debut in 1967. It is considered legal tender in South Africa and this position is guaranteed under the South African Reserve Bank Act of 1989.
Design
Another unique facet of the South African Gold Krugerrand is its metallic composition. The Gold Krugerrand has 22-karat gold content, just like the American Gold Eagle. However, the South African Mint wanted a durable gold coin for production and chose a different metallic alloy in addition to gold. Both the Gold Krugerrand and Gold Eagle have 91.67% gold by weight, but the Krugerrand has 8.33% copper.
On the obverse is a design from Otto Schultz featuring the left-profile portrait of Paul Kruger, the four-term president of the old South African Republic under Boer control, and the man whom the coin would come to be named after. The reverse features the springbok antelope, the official emblem of South Africa. Both sides of the coin feature engravings in English and Afrikaans.
