The Chinese Mint began issuing Gold Panda coins in 1982. Until 2015, the series was struck in Troy ounces before moving to Gram weights in 2016. Each year, the coins showcase a different image of the Giant Panda, making them popular among collectors. BGASC now offers the 1991 1 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coin featuring a Small Date engraving.

Highlights:

  • Coin arrives inside a sealed plastic pouch!
  • 10th coin in the 1 oz Gold Panda Series!
  • Small Date engraving!
  • Declared mintage of only 36,367 coins!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure gold.
  • On the obverse is the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests.
  • The reverse features a panda chewing on a bamboo twig.

These 1991 1 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coins are protected in sealed plastic pouches. The Small Date detail refers to the appearance of the date, which is made up of smaller, more closely spaced numbers. Only 36,367 of these coins were struck by the Chinese Mint in 1991.

Obverse

On the obverse side of the 1991 1 oz Gold Panda Coin, youll find the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This structure is located in the Temple of Heaven in Beijing and has been an important part of Chinese spiritual life since the Ming Dynasty.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1991 Chinese Gold Panda Coin includes the image of a panda sitting quietly by a pond, eating bamboo. Each year’s design is different, and the 1991 version captures the panda in a calm and familiar pose in its natural setting.

History

Native to mountainous regions of central China, Giant Pandas are most commonly found in the provinces of Sichuan, Gansu, and Shaanxi. They live in bamboo forests at elevations ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 feet. Known for their reliance on bamboo, pandas use a modified wrist bone, or pseudo-thumb, to help them handle their food.
