{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}The South African Krugerrand made its debut in 1967, becoming the first modern gold bullion coin aimed at private buyers. During a time when gold ownership was tightly controlled in many countries, the Krugerrand introduced a new approach by using weight-based valuation instead of traditional currency denominations. BGASC now offers the 1994 1/4 oz South African Gold Krugerrand Coin.
Highlights:
Each 1994 1/4 oz Gold Krugerrand from BGASC ships in a protective plastic flip. The 1/4 oz size is part of a series of fractional coins introduced in 1980, following the original 1 oz version released in 1967. These coins consist of 22-karat gold, a blend that includes 91.67% gold and 8.33% copper, adding strength and a reddish tone.
Obverse
The obverse of the coin features a left-facing portrait of Paul Kruger, created by artist Otto Schultz. Around his image are the inscriptions SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA, honoring the dual-language identity of the country when the Krugerrand series began.
Reverse
The reverse displays the image of a springbok antelope in motion, a design by Coert Steynberg. This national symbol of South Africa is captured mid-leap, with elegant lines and curved horns, offering a sense of movement and balance.
History
Paul Kruger, after whom the coin is partially named, was the final president of the South African Republic, serving from 1883 to 1900. A staunch defender of Afrikaner identity and sovereignty, Kruger was a prominent figure during the Boer Wars. While respected by many for his leadership, his legacy is also marked by the racial attitudes of his time.
