China introduced its Gold Panda Series in 1982, starting with 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz coins. In 1983, the 1/20 oz coin was added to the series. Known for its annually updated panda designs, this collection has remained a favorite among gold coin buyers. BGASC is currently offering the 1998 1/20 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coin.

Highlights:

  • Comes in protective plastic packaging!
  • 17th coin in the Gold Panda Series!
  • Mintage limited to 106,108 coins!
  • Contains 1/20 Troy oz of .999 pure gold.
  • Bears a face value of 5 Yuan backed by the government of China.
  • Obverse depicts the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests.
  • Reverse shows a panda reclining with bamboo on a rock.

Each 1998 1/20 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coin comes sealed in a clear plastic pouch. Native to Chinas forested mountain regions, giant pandas are best known for their bamboo-based diet. Though they belong to the carnivore group, pandas rely mostly on bamboo and have adapted accordingly.

Obverse

The obverse of the 1998 Chinese Gold Panda Coin displays the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests, a key part of the Temple of Heaven complex in Beijing. Emperors once used this space to pray for good harvests. The buildings tiered roof and stone base are shown in fine detail on the coin.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 1998 1/20 oz Gold Panda Coin, youll see a panda relaxing on a rock with bamboo in its paw. While their digestive systems arent well-suited for plant material, pandas must eat large quantities of bamboo each dayup to 40 poundsto maintain their health.

History

Because bamboo plants flower and die in cycles, pandas often move to different areas as food sources change. This dependence on bamboo and its growth patterns makes pandas more sensitive to changes in their environment.
