{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}The Krugerrand debuted in 1967 as one of the first modern gold bullion coins, designed to reflect the actual gold content rather than assign a traditional face value. This approach made it easier to own and trade gold during a time when personal gold ownership was limited in many countries. Today, BGASC offers the 2000 1/4 oz South African Gold Krugerrand Coin.
Highlights:
Each coin is packaged in a standard plastic flip. The 1/4 oz Gold Krugerrand debuted in 1980 as one of the first fractional sizes to follow the original 1 oz version. It contains 22-karat gold, made with 91.67% gold and 8.33% copper, giving it a warm, reddish tone and better resistance to wear.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 2000 Gold Krugerrand is a portrait of Paul Kruger, a former South African president. Artist Otto Schultz created this left-facing design, with the inscriptions SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA written in Afrikaans and English.
Reverse
The reverse side of the coin features the springbok antelope in motion. This design by Coert Steynberg shows the animal leaping across the landscape, a symbol often used to represent South Africas natural heritage.
History
By offering fractional denominations, the Krugerrand series opened gold investment to more people. These smaller coins carried the same well-known designs while helping South Africa remain a key player in the bullion industry during a politically complex period in its history.
