The Australian Kookaburra series is the Perth Mints longest-running silver bullion coin program. First released in 1990, it was one of the Mints first coins to showcase an Australian animal with a new design each year. Today, you can find 2004 1 oz Australian Silver Kookaburra Coins at BGASC.

Highlights:

  • Comes with a protective plastic capsule!
  • 15th release of 1 oz Silver Kookaburras!
  • Declared mintage of 84,455 coins!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver.
  • The face value of $1 (AUD) is fully backed by the Australian government.
  • On the obverse is an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
  • The reverse features a kookaburra perched on a tree branch as another flies overhead.

Every 2004 1 oz Australian Silver Kookaburra Coin is secured in a protective plastic capsule. Although the maximum mintage for the year was 300,000, the Perth Mint produced only 84,455 coins. This shows a continued decline in Kookaburra coin mintages during the early 21st century, with sales falling by around 20,000 coins compared to the year 2000.

Obverse

The obverse of the 2004 Australian Silver Kookaburra displays Queen Elizabeth II in a right-facing portrait. This is the fifth portrait of the Queen to appear on Australian coins, showing her wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara.

Reverse

The reverse design shows a kookaburra sitting on a tree branch, while another kookaburra flies overhead. Kookaburras demonstrate strong teamwork within their pairs by grooming each other, protecting their home together, and even developing unique calls that help distinguish them from other pairs in the area.

History

Kookaburras are well known for forming lifelong bonds with a single mate. They stay in the same territory all year long and use their loud, laughter-like calls to stay connected and warn off any neighboring birds. Their duet calls are part of what makes their partnerships so strong.
