The Proof American Gold Eagle has been a popular collector’s coin from the U.S. Mint since its introduction in 1986. It started out with just the 1 oz size and expanded in the next two years to include fractional weights. Except for 2009, the series has been issued yearly ever since. BGASC now offers the 2004-W 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin.

Highlights:

  • Comes with a protective capsule, a presentation box, a themed outer shipper, and a Certificate of Authenticity!
  • 19th release of the 1 oz Proof Gold Eagle!
  • Declared mintage of 28,215 coins!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of actual gold content.
  • The face value of $50 (USD) is fully backed by the US government.
  • Obverse features Lady Liberty.
  • Reverse showcases a family of bald eagles.
  • Includes the W mint mark from the West Point Mint.

Each 2004-W 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle is delivered in its original U.S. Mint packaging. That includes a protective capsule, a display box, a themed outer shipper, and a Certificate of Authenticity. These 22-karat proof coins are made of 91.67% gold, 5.33% copper, and 3% silver, with frosted images set against reflective surfaces.

Obverse

The obverse design comes from Augustus Saint-Gaudens, who created this depiction of Liberty in the early 20th century. Liberty is shown walking forward with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. The design includes the Capitol building and radiant sunbeams behind her.

Reverse

The reverse features a family of bald eagles in a nest, created by artist Miley Busiek. A male eagle is seen flying above while the female rests in the nest with their young. This image serves as a symbol of unity and care within American families.

History

In the early 2000s, the U.S. Mint produced fewer Proof Gold Eagles compared to earlier years. From 2000 to 2004, mintage figures for the 1 oz version remained below 30,000 each year. The 2004 coin had a final mintage of 28,215.
