{{/presale}}The exquisite Humbert ingot, a renowned numismatic treasure, was minted in the early days of California’s statehood. It is a unique fifty-dollar octagonal “slug,” also referred to as the Quintuple Eagle or the Five-Eagle Piece, bearing the name of the U.S. Assayer of San Francisco. The ingot is distinguished by its historical significance and remarkable design, which have served as inspiration for a series of smaller commemorative coins minted in the late Aughts. These coins pay homage to the original’s aesthetic and are crafted using hand-engraved dies, resulting in a stunning cameo finish. Today, BGASC offers the 2009 1 oz Proof Humbert Commemorative Octagon Gold Coin to you for purchase online.
Highlights:
The 2009 Proof Humbert Commemorative Octagon Gold Coin is an exceptional piece that is packaged in a tamper-proof plastic, containing a Troy ounce of pure California gold. It is labeled with NGC’s certification of a Gem Proof grade, indicating a flawlessly crafted coin, with only minor hairline scratches outside of prime focal areas.
Obverse
The obverse side shows an eagle with its wings outstretched and a rock and shield behind it. It is surrounded by inscriptions of the identifying hallmarks of the coin.
Reverse
On the reverse side, you will find additional inscriptions that include “HUMBERT GOLD INGOT,” “COMMEMORATIVE 2009,” “PURE CALIFORNIA GOLD,” and “1 OZ TROY 999.9 FINE,” with an abstract geometric pattern decorating the backdrop.
History
The emergence of California into American statehood in 1850 was accompanied by a significant shortage of currency, which was necessary to fuel the growing economy. To address this issue, Augustus Humbert was assigned the critical task of resolving the shortage. He established a United States Assay Office in San Francisco in 1850, which eventually led to the establishment of the San Francisco Mint. During 1851 and 1852, a series of octagonal gold ingots, commonly known as “slugs,” were produced bearing his name.
