{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}The Perth Mints Australian Koala Series debuted in 2007 as a silver bullion program featuring yearly designs of Australias famous tree-dwelling marsupial. In the early years, coins were offered in a range of weights: 1/2 oz, 1 oz, 10 oz, and 1 Kilo. Today, only the 1 oz and 1 Kilo coins remain in production. A signature feature of the series is that the reverse artwork changes each year. BGASC now offers the 2010 1 Kilo Australian Silver Koala Coin.
Highlights:
Each coin comes secured in a plastic capsule for protection. In 2010, the Perth Mint struck a total of 30,692 of the 1 Kilo Koala coins, making it the second-highest mintage for the year behind the 1 oz version, which had over 233,000 pieces minted. That year also saw the release of the 1/2 oz (13,315 coins) and 10 oz (12,928 coins) sizes.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2010 Australian Silver Koala Coin features Queen Elizabeth II. Shown in a right-facing portrait, the Queen wears the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara in this design by Ian Rank-Broadley. First introduced in 1998, this portrait was used for many years on coins from Australia and other Commonwealth nations.
Reverse
On the reverse side of the 2010 1 Kilo Koala, youll find a detailed image of a koala moving along the branch of a gum tree. These trees serve as more than just a source of foodthey provide shelter and protection. Koalas spend a large part of their lives in the trees, often resting for most of the day to stay safe and preserve energy.
History
Koalas depend heavily on eucalyptus trees, which are often called gum trees. These trees are their primary food source. While eucalyptus leaves are generally toxic to most animals, koalas have adapted to digest them. They have special gut bacteria that break down the harmful chemicals in the leaves, and their strong jaws help them chew the fibrous leaves effectively.
