The Australian Platinum Platypus represents a unique era in Perth Mints platinum coin history. After the Platinum Koala ran from 1988 to 2000, the mint reintroduced platinum coins in 2011 with the Platinum Platypus. This series lasted until 2018 before being replaced by the Platinum Kangaroo in 2019. Right now, 2012 1 oz Australian Platinum Platypus Coins are available from BGASC.

Highlights:

  • Comes in an acrylic capsule!
  • Second release in the Platinum Platypus Series!
  • Mintage limited to 26,580 coins!
  • Contains 1 troy oz of .9995 pure platinum.
  • Face value of $100 (AUD) supported by Australias federal government.
  • The obverse shows Queen Elizabeth II.
  • The reverse depicts the platypus underwater.

Each 2012 1 oz Australian Platinum Platypus Coin ships in its own acrylic capsule. The 2012 mintage finished at 26,580 coins, the second-highest total in the series. Only the 2011 debut topped it with its full run of 30,000 coins. Later issues through 2018 had much smaller totals, with 2015 reaching about half of the 2012 mintage.

Obverse

The obverse side of the 2012 Australian Platinum Platypus features the famous 1998 effigy of Queen Elizabeth II created by Ian Rank-Broadley. This portrait shows the Queen wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 2012 1 oz Platinum Platypus Coin, a platypus appears swimming beneath the water. These animals need reliable water sources with suitable nesting spots, plenty of aquatic invertebrates for food, and little disruption along the riverbanks.

History

Platypuses are among the most distinctive mammals on Earth, with roots tracing back more than 100 million years. They live in freshwater regions across eastern Australia and Tasmania, thriving in both warm rainforest creeks and cooler southern rivers.
