The First Spouse Series from the United States Mint was created to honor the First Ladies who supported Americas presidents. However, with the 2012 release for President Chester A. Arthur, there was no First Lady to feature. Instead, the Mint made history by choosing suffragist Alice Paul for the series. Today, BGASC offers the 2012-W 1/2 oz US Mint First Spouse Alice Paul Gold Coin.

Highlights:

  • Comes in a protective plastic slab!
  • 22nd release in the First Spouse Series!
  • The only coin in the collection that does not depict a First Lady or Lady Liberty!
  • Declared mintage of just 2,798 coins!
  • Includes a David Hall hand-signed label!
  • Contains 1/2 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold.
  • Assigned a $10 (USD) face value, backed by the U.S. government.
  • Graded Mint State 70 by the Professional Coin Grading Service.
  • Obverse features Alice Pauls portrait.
  • Reverse design showcases a suffragette with an American flag.
  • Struck at the West Point Mint with a “W” mint mark.

Each 2012-W 1/2 oz US Mint First Spouse Alice Paul Gold Coin is in Mint State 70 condition, the highest grade awarded by PCGS. It features full mint luster and no visible imperfections. Alice Paul is the only historical figure in the First Spouse Series who was not a First Lady. This coin is housed in a slab that includes a label personally signed by David Hall, co-founder of PCGS.

Obverse

The obverse of the 2012-W US Mint First Spouse Alice Paul Gold Coin features a portrait of Alice Paul, commemorating her role in the womens suffrage movement. She played a key part in the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote in 1920, and later authored the Equal Rights Amendment to push for broader gender equality.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 2012-W 1/2 oz First Spouse Alice Paul Gold Coin, a suffragette is shown marching forward with an American flag. She wears a sash that reads VOTES FOR WOMEN, representing the movements efforts to secure womens voting rights in the early 20th century.

History

Chester A. Arthur is one of a few U.S. Presidents who served without a First Lady. His wife, Nell Arthur, passed away in 1880, over a year before he took office following the assassination of President James A. Garfield.
