{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}The First Spouse Series from the United States Mint is a collection of 1/2 oz gold coins recognizing the First Ladies of the United States. Launched in 2007, the series follows each spouse in the order of her husbands presidency, concluding with Betty Ford. The latest release in the series was the 2020 Barbara Bush Coin, with each First Lady eligible for inclusion following her husbands appearance in the Presidential $1 Coin Series. BGASC now offers the 2013-W 1/2 oz US Mint First Spouse Edith Wilson Gold Coin.
Highlights:
The 2013-W 1/2 oz US Mint First Spouse Edith Wilson Gold Coin is available here in Mint State 70 condition. This designation means the coin has a sharp strike, complete mint luster, and no visible flaws.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2013-W US Mint First Spouse Edith Wilson Gold Coin presents a portrait of the First Lady. She played a key role in her husbands administration and often accompanied him on diplomatic trips during World War I. To support wartime conservation, she introduced food rationing at the White House, promoting initiatives like wheatless Wednesdays and meatless Mondays. She also kept a flock of sheep on the White House lawn to provide wool for the war effort.
Reverse
On the reverse, the design captures an important moment in history with Edith Wilsons hand resting on President Wilsons hand as he leans on a cane. After suffering a severe stroke in 1919, the President faced significant physical limitations, and Edith stepped in as his primary caregiver. She became an essential figure in decision-making, earning her the nickname the Secret President.
History
Edith Wilson became the second wife of President Woodrow Wilson in 1915, just a year after his first wife passed away. Their marriage took place during his first term, and she became a pivotal figure in his presidency. When President Wilsons health declined in his second term, Edith assumed significant responsibilities, making her one of the most influential First Ladies in history.
