{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}The First Spouse Series is a collection of 1/2 oz gold coins struck by the United States Mint to recognize the First Ladies of the United States. Launched in 2007, the series honors each First Lady in order of her husbands presidency, concluding with Betty Ford. The most recent release in the series was the 2020 Barbara Bush coin, with eligibility tied to the $1 Presidential Coin Series. You can now purchase the 2013-W 1/2 oz US Mint First Spouse Edith Wilson Gold Coin online at BGASC.
Highlights:
These 2013-W 1/2 oz US Mint First Spouse Edith Wilson Gold Coins are graded Mint State 70, meaning they have no visible imperfections and retain full mint luster. Each coin also includes a hand-signed label from David Hall, co-founder of the Professional Coin Grading Service.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2013-W 1/2 oz First Spouse Edith Wilson Gold Coin showcases a portrait of Edith Wilson, who played a key role in advising her husband, President Woodrow Wilson. She frequently traveled with him during World War I and supported domestic conservation efforts by promoting food rationing and maintaining a flock of sheep on the White House lawn.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2013-W US Mint First Spouse Edith Wilson Gold Coin, her hand rests on President Wilsons as he holds a cane. After President Wilson suffered a severe stroke in 1919, Edith became his primary caregiver and managed his responsibilities. She determined which issues needed his attention, leading to speculation that she was the de facto president during this time.
History
The Wilsons marriage was scrutinized by the press due to the short period between the death of his first wife and his remarriage to Edith. However, she remained committed to her role and helped ensure the smooth functioning of the administration. After President Wilsons term, she dedicated herself to protecting his legacy, advocating for his policies and defending her role in his presidency until her passing in 1961. At the time of her death, she was the longest-living First Lady.
