The Australian Dragon Series from Perth Mint celebrates the legendary Chinese dragon in bullion form. In 2019, the mint released a platinum version for the first time with a maximum mintage of just 2,500 coins. Today, 2019 1 oz Australian Platinum Dragon Coins are available at BGASC.

Highlights:

  • Coin arrives in a protective plastic flip!
  • Lone issue of a Platinum Dragon!
  • Maximum mintage of 2,500 coins!
  • Declared sales of only 2,099 coins!
  • Contains 1 troy oz of .9995 pure platinum.
  • Issued a face value of $100 (AUD) by Australia.
  • Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse.
  • Chinese dragon on the reverse.

Each 2019 1 oz Australian Platinum Dragon Coin is shipped in a protective plastic flip. Although the Perth Mint set the mintage limit at 2,500 coins, only 2,099 were sold, so just 2,099 coins reached buyers in the end.

Obverse

The obverse of the 2019 1 oz Platinum Dragon Coin carries the final effigy of Queen Elizabeth II used on Australian coins. Designed in 2015 by The Royal Mint, this portrait depicts the Queen at 89 years old wearing the George IV State Diadem and was introduced to Australian coins in 2018 as the sixth official effigy.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 2019 Australian Platinum Dragon, Perth Mint presents a dramatic design of a Chinese dragon. The long, twisting creature appears chasing a flaming pearl, a common symbol in Chinese mythology. Dragons in Chinese culture represent wisdom, strength, and protection rather than destruction as in many Western legends.

History

Known as the long in Chinese tradition, the dragon has long been associated with good luck and prosperity, believed to control rain and waterways essential for agriculture. Emperors once claimed descent from dragons, with the five-clawed dragon reserved for imperial authority. Dragons remain a major part of Chinese festivals, art, and feng shui practices today.
