Each 2020 1/4 oz Canadian Dragon Gold Coin ships in protective plastic. The coin features reverse-proof visuals, meaning the dragon design has a shiny finish set against a matte background. These coins are part of a series that the Royal Canadian Mint produced between 2017 and 2023.
Obverse
On the obverse side of this coin is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This design was introduced in 2003 and was created by Canadian artist Susanna Blunt. It shows the Queen without a crown, which was unusual for coins during her reign.
Reverse
The reverse side features the Chinese dragon coiled into the shape of an 8, a lucky number in Chinese culture. In these traditions, dragons are seen as kind and strong beings connected to water, rainfall, and rivers. They are honored as protectors and bringers of good fortune.
History
Chinese dragons are believed to be made up of parts from nine animals. These include the head of a camel, horns of a deer, eyes of a rabbit, ears of a cow, the neck of a snake, belly of a clam, scales of a carp, claws of an eagle, and the paws of a tiger. Many images show dragons playing with a flaming pearl, a symbol of the moon, wisdom, or wealth.
