Because the Royal Mint moved from Queen Elizabeth II to King Charles III during 2023 production, this date is a true crossover year. Some coins show the Queens final appearance on Britannia bullion, while others feature the first obverse portrait of the new king. Highlights:
Each 2023 1/4 oz British Silver Britannia Coin is housed in a protective plastic flip. The Royal Mint started the year using the last approved effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. After her passing in September 2022, the mint had a short turnaround to design and prepare King Charles IIIs portrait. That led to a limited run with the Queens image before the new obverse was introduced.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2023 British Silver Britannia may show one of two monarchs. Some early strikes feature Jody Clarks fifth-generation portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in right-profile relief, wearing the George IV State Diadem. Most of the 2023 issue carries Martin Jennings left-profile portrait of King Charles III, shown without a crown.
Reverse
On the reverse, the 2023 1/4 oz Silver Britannia Coin displays Philip Nathans well-known 1987 design. Britannia stands holding a trident and a Union Jack shield, wearing her helmet to complete an image that has become a standard for the series.
History
Britannia has been used for generations to represent Britains strength and stability. The Corinthian helmet she wears connects her image to ancient defenders and suggests readiness and courage. Her shield stands for protection and national unity, while the trident in her hand reflects Britains identity as a maritime power with a long naval tradition.

In order to receive free shipping on purchases of $199 or more, you must live within the 50 US states. For orders less than $199, a $9.95 shipping fee applies. Most BGASC orders are shipped within one (1) business day of your payment clearing. Payments made via PayPal clear instantly. Bitcoin payments clear instantly once the transaction is confirmed. Credit Card and bank wire payments process within 1 business day. ACH and paper check payments take 3-5 business days. Once payments are processed, products are released to fulfillment for packaging and shipping.
All orders of $199 or more that are eligible for free shipping are, by default, shipped via a carrier of our choice (USPS or UPS). Depending on the contents and size of your purchase, you may be able to upgrade to a specific carrier during checkout.
For those orders of $999.99 or less, there is no need to sign for your package. However, you may select the option to require a signature at delivery if you want. This can be chosen and paid for at checkout. All orders of $1000 or more require a signature to complete delivery.
