{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}The Morgan Silver Dollar was first introduced in 1878 following the Bland-Allison Act, a law that required the US Treasury to purchase large quantities of domestic silver for coin production. The coin was designed by George T. Morgan, an English-born engraver whose style brought a refined and classical look to American coinage. His design featured a recognizable Liberty portrait on the obverse and a commanding heraldic eagle on the reverse. These elements, combined with the coins silver content, helped the Morgan Dollar become a lasting part of US numismatic history. In 2021, the US Mint reintroduced the design as a modern bullion release. Today, certified 2023 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are available from BGASC.
Highlights:
Each 2023 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin offered here has been graded as flawless. A Mint State 70 grade indicates a coin with full original luster and no visible imperfections. The slabs used for encapsulation may feature different label designs or color schemes depending on the grading service. Label selection is random, and specific designs cannot be requested.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2023 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins features Lady Liberty facing left. She wears a Phrygian cap and coronet, with a laurel wreath woven into her hair. This modern release closely follows the details of George T. Morgans original design, preserving the historic look collectors recognize.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2023 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins is the familiar heraldic eagle. The eagle is shown with wings spread wide, holding arrows and an olive branch to symbolize strength and peace. Morgans eagle design stands apart from later versions by omitting the national shield.
History
While most Morgan Dollars were struck between the late 1800s and early 1900s, the series returned briefly in 1921. This final production year followed the Pittman Act, which required the minting of millions of silver dollars to replace coins that had been melted during World War I. Over 86 million Morgan Dollars were produced at three US Mint locations in 1921. Soon after, the design was retired permanently and replaced by the Peace Dollar.
