History
Initially, the Kennedy Half Dollar was composed of 90% silver and 10% copper. However, due to a silver shortage caused by increased hoarding and the rising price of silver in the 1960s, the silver content was reduced. From 1965 to 1970, the Kennedy Half Dollar was minted with 40% silver and 60% copper. Since 1971, the coin has been produced with a copper-nickel-clad composition, similar to other circulating coins in the United States.
